Two silk appliqué festival tangkas (thang ka), or göku (gos sku) adorn the south face of the Potala's White Palace during the Sertreng Ceremony (tshogs mchod ser sbreng), which took place on the 30th day of the second month of the Tibetan calendar. The tangkas, featuring the Buddha surrounded by deities and bodhisattvas, measure 75 x 40 ft and have been sewn together. The outer Zhöl pillar, Doring Chima (rdo ring phyi ma), is visible in the center of the image, with one of the two Khangser (khang ser), Chinese-style pagodas, located directly behind it (the edge of the other is at the lower left of the photo) and the Zhöl main gate (ghung sgo) behind that. Crowds of monks and lay people are gathered in the foreground and around the pillar.Associated Resources
