Description:

by Jessica O'Leary

A procession of mounted senior aristocrats riding along the south side of the Barkor (bar skor), surrounded by crowds of monks, during the Great Prayer Festival, Mönlam Chenmo (smon lam chen mo), held during the first month of the Tibetan calendar. The image faces east and was likely taken from the Kapshö (ka shod) house. Labrang Nyingpa (bla brang rnying pa) can be seen on the left side at middle distance, with the Zurkhang (zur khang) house behind it. The building across from the Zurkhang house is the former Tsarong (tsha rong) house, Pomdatsang (spom mda' tshang). In the center background is a tall prayer flag pole, the Sharkyareng Darchen (shar skya rengs dar chen).
