Description:

by Jessica O'Leary

View of the Potala’s south face from the southwest side of the Barkor (bar skor). The paved square in the center of the image is Sungchöra square (gsung chos ra), located on the south side of the Jokhang (jo khang) in front of the Kashag (bka' shag). The prayer flagpole on the left side of the square is the Kelzang Darchen (bskal bzang dar chen). It marked the south side of the Barkor and was positioned in front of the house of the 7th Dalai Lama's family, Yapzhi Sampo (yab gzhis bsam pho). The Doring house is directly below the Potala. An incense burner, or sangkhung (bsang khung), is to the right of the Kelzang Darchen. Awnings covering shopkeepers' stalls can be seen along the bottom.
