Description:

by Jessica O'Leary

Crowds gathering in the street, leaning from windows, and sitting on rooftops, on the south side of the Barkor (bar skor). They are waiting for a procession to pass by, possibly on 4th March 1921 during the "Invitation to Maitreya" festival, or Jampa Dendren (byams pa gdan 'dren), which took place on the 25th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. The Potala can be seen in the distance with tall mountains behind it.The large building in the foreground center right is the Zurkhang (zur khang) house, with Labrang Nyingpa (bla brang rnying pa) to its left and directly below the Potala.
