A wrestling competition, part of the "Invitation to Maitreya" festival, or Jampa Dendren (byams pa gdan 'dren), which took place on the 25th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. The wrestlers, members of the Dalai Lama's (tA la'i bla ma) bodyguard regiment, can be seen in the foreground. The event is taking place in Sungchöra (gsung chos rwa) square in front of the Kashag (bka' shag), on the south side of the Jokhang (jo khang). The Dalai Lama is seated in the verandah on the upper right corner of the building. Spectators line the square.Associated Resources
