by Jessica O'Leary

Officials surround the Nechung Oracle (gnas chung chos rgyal chen po), one of the state oracles of Tibet, during the Sertreng ceremony (tshogs mchod ser sbreng), or "The Golden Procession of the Assembly of Worship." The photograph looks down on Zhöl (zhol) village, facing south. It was taken from the roof of one of the buildings at the base of the Potala or from the steps. The tent in which officials sit can be seen on the far left in the middle distance.
